Sarakeet:  In My Car

I have made big choices while alone and driving. I have found peace in a car.  I have used driving to escape.  I have used driving to come home.   I have screamed and cried and laughed hard enough to shake in a car. I once drew blood while fighting in a car.  I’ve had sex in a car.  I’ve breastfed my baby in a car.  I’ve been safe.  I’ve been careless.  I’ve prayed and found grace over and over and over again in a car.

So farm life gave me a lot of child labor opportunities. I had to pick up pecans, cut corn off the cob, shell beans and field peas, prep food for canning but probably the most amusing was helping band calves. Once a year my dad and grandad would round up all the male calves that we were going to keep, wrestle them to the ground and use this little "gun" to put a little green rubber ring around their testicles. My job was keeping track of those rings and making sure the "gun" was loaded and stay out of the way when I wasn't needed. It was always an exciting day and I loved being part of it.
